Protective Eyewear

We only have two eyes each, and if they're injured, there's usually very little the doctors can do. Eyes are some of the most fragile and delicate parts of the human body. Ironically, they're also the parts of the body most people neglect to protect when they're working on industrial applications. Whether you're a DIY carpenter or a dentist in Mississauga, you need to protect your eyes. They're the only ones you have. Here are some types of protective eyewear you might consider wearing.

Safety Glasses

Safety glasses are the most common type of protective eyewear found in Canadian industry. Most safety glasses are made of simple shatterproof plastic and shield your eyes from contamination by dust and debris. Most people in average Toronto neighbourhoods will have at least one pair hanging around for when they work in the garage or on the car. You can buy them for a few dollars at any home improvement store. Prescription eyeglasses are also acceptable substitutes for clear safety glasses in many cases.

Face Shields

If you're doing a more dangerous activity that poses a danger to your whole face rather than just your eyes, a face shield is more appropriate than safety glasses. Welders wear face shields to keep sparks off their skin and out of their eyes. Medical professionals also use face shields when they're using bone saws or treating patients with infected blood in order to keep biomedical waste from entering their bloodstream through their mouths, noses, and eyes. Price points on face shields vary. The Canadian Funding Corp might have to step in to help you afford your welding protection, while simple plastic shields are less than $50.

Goggles

If there's some chance of a harmful substance leaking around the edges of an ordinary pair of safety glasses, workers wear goggles instead, which completely surround the eyes and cut them off from the dangers in the atmosphere. If there's a stinging gas given off by the heat shrink sleeves manufacturing process, goggles would be appropriate. Swimmers and divers also wear goggles to keep chlorine and dirty water from irritating their eyes. Goggles range in price from a few dollars to hundreds depending on what they're protecting you from.

Sunglasses

In situations where strong light poses a danger to the eyes, sunglasses should be worn. If you're working outdoors on your one storey house plans, common polarized sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection are fine, but if you're studying eclipses, using lasers, or working in outer space, specialized sunglasses are required, as extra protection is needed against certain wavelengths of light. Common sunglasses start at around $10 while the gold-impregnated lenses used in space cost thousands or dollars. Protective eyewear for welders also incorporates light protection.
